Washington Square

Washington Square, Philadelphia (PA)

A quiet green square two blocks from Independence Hall that is really a mass grave: the city’s potter’s field and a burial pit for thousands of yellow-fever dead and for Revolutionary and British soldiers alike, now marked by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution. The old story tells of Leah, a Quaker woman whose ghost guarded the graves from body-snatchers. Walk it knowing what lies under the grass.
