A worked gold mine in Virginia, closed in 1885
Virginia had a gold belt and worked it, which surprises most people. The Greenwood mine ran near Independent Hill in Prince William County for a few years and closed in 1885, one of only two gold mines known in the county, the other being the Crawford placer prospect on Neabsco Creek. Gold turned up now and then at the Cabin Branch pyrite mine at Dumfries as well. The Greenwood site sat at the head of the north branch of Quantico Creek, on ground that is now part of Prince William Forest Park.
