The Hay-Adams and Lafayette Square

Lafayette Square, Washington DC

The square across from the White House has more documented tragedy per acre than anywhere in the capital, starting with the 1859 killing of Philip Barton Key in broad daylight by a congressman who then won the first successful temporary-insanity defence in American history. The Hay-Adams hotel stands on the site of the houses of John Hay and Henry Adams, and staff have reported Clover Adams, who took her own life in 1885, on the fourth floor each December. PUBLIC square; the hotel is a working hotel.
