A glacial bowl walled by five Presidential peaks, wilderness since 1964
A glacial cirque is the bowl a glacier grinds out of a mountainside as it eats backwards into the rock, and this is the great one of the White Mountains. Its walls are the Presidentials themselves, running north from Mount Washington at 6,288 feet through Clay, Jefferson, Adams and Madison, and the West Branch of the Peabody drains it. Congress made it a wilderness in 1964, the oldest and the smallest in New Hampshire at 5,552 acres. Stand at the bottom of it and every direction you look is mountain.
