A hillside in Stow, on the Maine side of the White Mountain National Forest, where amethyst comes out of the pegmatite in good purple crystals. The Forest Service has run this as a designated public collecting area, with a free permit from the ranger district and hand tools only. It is a proper dig in the woods rather than a salted tourist pit, and the walk in is part of it. PUBLIC with a WMNF permit, Stow (Oxford County).
