The smoky quartz of the White Mountains is New Hampshire’s state gem, and Moat Mountain above Conway is the classic ground, with big glassy crystals from cavities in the granite, often alongside green amazonite feldspar. The White Mountain National Forest permits hobby mineral collecting for personal use with hand tools over much of its land, no permit needed for casual collecting, which makes this one of the friendliest public gem mountains in the East. PUBLIC (WMNF rules apply, hand tools only).
