Richmond basin coal, worked from 1837 to the 1880s
A group of coal shafts and mines worked in the Southside country outside Richmond from 1837 until about 1883. Virginia coal is not what most people picture when they think of American coalfields, but the Richmond basin was being dug generations before the great West Virginia seams opened, and these pits are part of that older story.
