Point Lookout

Point Lookout State Park (St. Mary’s County, MD)

At the tip of southern Maryland, where the Potomac meets the Chesapeake, the Union ran a Civil War prison camp that held far more men than it was built for; thousands of Confederate prisoners died of disease and exposure and were buried in the marsh. It is called one of the most haunted places in the state, and the lighthouse and the shore are a real, beautiful, heavy piece of ground.
