The northern edge of the cypress swamps

Baldcypress ranges south to Florida and west into Texas, and at Trap Pond in southwestern Delaware it grows in one of the northernmost natural stands in the United States. The pond was dammed in the late 1700s to power a sawmill cutting the big cypress out of this swamp. The federal government bought it and the farms around it in the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built the first park, and in 1951 it became one of Delaware’s first state parks. Paddle the marked water trails, more than nine miles of them, out among the knees and buttressed trunks. PUBLIC, near Laurel, Sussex County.
