The most photographed building on the island, and not once a gambling house
The great white drum standing over Avalon Bay is the first thing you see coming in off the water, and the largest building on the island. Inside it holds a movie theatre and a ballroom, and for years an island art and history museum as well. The name throws almost everybody: casino is the Spanish word for a gathering place, somewhere people meet for shows and dancing, and this one has never been a gambling house at all. Read it as a village hall built on the scale of an ocean liner.
