An airstrip on the island’s spine at 1,602 feet, feeding the island daily

Catalina’s airfield sits up on the spine of the island at 1,602 feet, six and a half miles northwest of Avalon and close to the highest ground there is. It is privately owned, open to the public, and works as general aviation rather than scheduled flights, so nothing here runs to a timetable you can book a seat on. The freight matters more than the passengers: supplies for the island come in by air daily, which is the real reason an airstrip exists on a ridge in the middle of nowhere.
