Nebraska’s largest colony of Black homesteaders, out in the Sandhills
Founded in 1907 in Cherry County and later renamed Audacious, this was Nebraska’s largest and most permanent colony of African American homesteaders, out on the Sandhills about ten miles north and west of Brownlee. It was disincorporated in 1936. Homesteading is usually told as one kind of story with one kind of family in it; DeWitty is the correction, and the ground it stood on is still there.
