Emigrants walked five miles off the trail just to look at them

Two formations standing above the plain near Bridgeport in the Panhandle, and one of the great signposts of the westward crossing. The Oregon-California, Mormon, Pony Express and Sidney-Deadwood trails all ran past them, and emigrants would walk as much as five miles off their route simply to get a proper look. Hundreds of them wrote the rocks into their diaries, which is how you know what they meant to people who had been staring at grass for weeks.
