Explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo died here in January 1543 of a festered wound, buried by legend in a lead-lined casket in his armor, and the grave has never been found. The island lore says he cursed permanent settlement, and it sits uninhabited to this day, rangers and researchers only. Reachable by park boat when seas allow; the loneliest of the Channel Islands either way.
