Chumash legend says the rock IS Hueneme, a wronged wife who threw herself to the sea and turned to stone, the kelp around it her husband's hair. Later tellings add the sorrowful lady seen at the cliff edge gazing seaward. The rock is real, famous from a hundred films, and the surf below it genuinely kills: view from the pullout, never the wave-cut edge.
