The Feliz curse of 1863 started it: Dona Petranilla, cut from the will, cursed the rancho, and the owners who followed drew fires, ruin and violence until Griffith J. Griffith gave the land away in 1896, then went to San Quentin anyway. The lore since: Petranilla in a white dress near the Crystal Springs ranger house, the abandoned 1966 zoo's empty cages sounding at night, and the picnic table where a couple died under a falling tree on Halloween 1976. A great city park by day; go with the crowds.
