Goli Otok

Goli Otok, the Adriatic (Croatia)

A bare white limestone island in the Adriatic, treeless and waterless, used from 1949 as Yugoslavia’s political prison camp, where thousands were held and brutalised, forced to labour in the stone quarries in heat and thirst. It closed in 1989 and stands empty, roofless buildings and quarry faces above the sea. Reachable by boat from Rab. A memorial, not a thrill.
