The second-largest mercury mine in the history of the world, worked in Slovenia from 1490 to the 1990s. Cinnabar (mercury sulphide) and droplets of native liquid mercury came out of this ground for five centuries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site (paired with Almadén in Spain), with the Anthony’s Shaft tour and a museum. A place of extraordinary mineralogy and a hard human history, mercury is a poison and the miners paid for it.
