The oldest masonry fort in the country, begun by the Spanish in 1672 of coquina, the shell-stone that swallowed cannonballs whole. It never fell to assault in three centuries of sieges, but it served as a prison, and the tales of the walled-up lovers and the shapes on the gun deck are as old as the walls. A national monument on the Matanzas bayfront.
