People have been mining salt out of this mountain above the lake in the Austrian Alps for seven thousand years, since the Bronze Age, which makes it the oldest salt mine on Earth. Salt (“white gold”) made this valley wealthy in prehistory, and the mine’s brine preserved the bodies and tools of the ancient miners, giving an entire era of European archaeology its name, the Hallstatt culture.
