The oldest mining district in North America. The turquoise hills at Cerrillos, south of Santa Fe, were worked by ancestral Pueblo people more than a thousand years ago, and Cerrillos turquoise traveled the whole continent in trade, some of it reaching the great city at Chaco Canyon. The Spanish mined it, the Tiffany company mined it in the 1890s. The old workings are on PRIVATE land (there is a small private turquoise-mining park with tours); the sky-blue stone is the heart of Southwestern jewelry. Buy from the Santa Fe and Cerrillos traders.
