A persistent low droning that some people in and around Taos hear and most do not. Investigators found roughly two percent of residents could hear it, and those who did reported different frequencies, somewhere between 32 and 80 Hz. It is not unique to New Mexico; the same complaint turns up in Britain, Canada and Australia, and a 1973 study of fifty cases found a throbbing background peaking around 30 to 40 Hz that was audible mainly in cool weather with a light breeze, often early morning, and confined to areas about six miles across. That localisation is the interesting part: whatever it is, it is not a single global source. No instrument has reliably recorded what the hearers describe.
