The richest Viking-age hoard ever found in Britain or Ireland. In 2014 a metal detectorist working a field near Balmaghie in Galloway, with permission, got a signal, and out of the ground came a buried world: silver arm-rings, a gold bird-shaped pin, a rock-crystal jar, silk from thousands of miles away, all packed into a vessel and hidden around AD 900. It took years of conservation to unwrap. It is now in National Museums Scotland. A real reminder of what this ground holds, found the legal way, with permission and reported to the Crown.
