A three-arch bridge over the Overtoun Burn near Dumbarton, finished in June 1895 to a design by Henry Ernest Milner. Since the 1950s at least three hundred dogs have been recorded jumping off it and at least fifty have died on the rocks fifty feet below, which got it the name the Dog Suicide Bridge. The likely answer is duller and stranger than the name: the canine psychologist David Sands proposed in 2014 that male mink urine in the vegetation, plus a parapet that hides the drop so the ground looks continuous, is enough. The RSPB found animal nests on the side the dogs prefer, and in testing seven of ten dogs reacted strongly to mink scent over mouse and squirrel. A local hunter disputes that mink are even there. Keep your dog on a lead on it.
