Wanlockhead & Leadhills gold

Placer gold, lead, gemstones

Scotland’s goldfield. The Lowther Hills around Wanlockhead (the highest village in Scotland) and Leadhills have given up gold for five centuries, and the gold in the Honours of Scotland, the oldest crown jewels in Britain, came from here. You can still pan the Wanlock Water and the Mennock, and this is where the World and Scottish gold-panning championships are held. Panning is generally tolerated for recreation, but the ground is a mix of PUBLIC and PRIVATE, so ask; keep small finds, report anything remarkable. The Museum of Lead Mining runs the story.
