A salt cavern collapsed under the swamp and 350 people were told to leave
On 3 August 2012 the ground in northern Assumption Parish opened up. An underground salt dome cavern, operated by the Texas Brine Company on a dome owned by Occidental Petroleum, had collapsed, and 350 people living nearby were advised to leave. The mandatory evacuation was not lifted until 2016. By the 2020 census 32 residents remained at Bayou Corne. This is what industrial solution mining looks like when a cavern gives way under a Louisiana swamp.
