Seventeen mounds, and the second-highest in the country at 72 feet

Seventeen mounds, an earthen geometric enclosure and a spread of habitation areas in Madison County, built most likely in the Middle Woodland period between about AD 1 and 500. It is the largest group of Middle Woodland mounds anywhere in the United States, and Sauls’ Mound at 72 feet is the second-highest surviving mound in the country. People were moving that much earth by hand, in baskets, two thousand years ago.
