Three prehistoric shell rings, one of the largest in North America
A shell ring is exactly what it sounds like: a curved midden of discarded shell, built up over generations into a bank that partly or wholly encloses a clear plaza in the middle. Nobody is certain why they were made. Fig Island, catalogued as 38CH42, carries three of them on the South Carolina coast, including one of the largest and most complex shell rings anywhere in North America and one of the best preserved circular ones. Thousands of years of shellfish suppers, stacked up into architecture.
