The dark Cooper above Charleston is where South Carolina’s fossil divers go for megalodon teeth, felt for by hand on the bottom in low visibility and a tidal current that turns every few hours. It is advanced diving, and a local dive operator is the sensible way in. Anyone collecting from state waters needs a Hobby License from the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology: six months for $5 in state or $10 from out of state, two years for $18 or $36. Recovery is by hand only, with no digging and no moving sediment, a reasonable number of fossils, and a report to the state every quarter; title to what you report then passes to you.
