The grim brick jail that held Charleston’s prisoners from 1802 to 1939, pirates and Civil War captives and Lavinia Fisher, hanged in 1820 and called by legend the first woman serial killer in America. Disease and cruelty killed many within its walls. Restored now and run for history and ghost tours, it is a fixture of haunted Charleston.
