Under the Old Exchange building on East Bay Street is the cellar the British used as a military prison during the occupation of Charleston, holding patriots including signers of the Declaration. Before that the city chained pirates here: Stede Bonnet, the gentleman pirate, and his crew were held in Charleston before being hanged at White Point in 1718 and buried below the low-water mark.
