The Reid School, now the Des Chutes Historical Museum

Bend’s 1914 schoolhouse, built of local volcanic tuff, taught the town’s children for sixty years and is now the county museum. Staff and volunteers have long reported the ordinary catalogue of an old school: footsteps in empty upstairs rooms, doors, a child heard in the hall. The building itself is the real draw, the stone was quarried nearby and the collection covers the timber boom, the railroad race and the homesteaders who starved out on the desert.
