Haunted place

Suomenlinna sea fortress

Suomenlinna, Helsinki (Finland)

A great 18th-century island fortress guarding Helsinki, built by Sweden, taken by Russia, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site you reach by ferry. Its tunnels, bastions and the old Kings Gate carry the usual garrison ghosts, but the real weight here is the Finnish Civil War of 1918, when the islands held a prison camp where large numbers of Red prisoners died of disease and starvation. A beautiful, layered, genuinely sombre place. PUBLIC, Helsinki, Finland.
