Patarei Prison

Tallinn (Estonia)

A vast sea fortress on the Tallinn shore, built by the Russian Empire in the 1840s and used as a prison through Estonian independence, Soviet occupation, Nazi occupation and Soviet occupation again, until 2002. It was left almost exactly as it emptied: cell doors open, medical wing intact, the gallows room still there. It now houses a museum of communist-era terror. PUBLIC (seasonal), Tallinn.
