Estonian oil shale

Kukersite (oil shale)

Estonia is the only country in the world that runs largely on oil shale: kukersite, a 460-million-year-old rock so rich in fossil algae that it burns, has been mined in the northeast since 1916 and still generates much of the nation’s power. The mines and the ash mountains dominate Ida-Viru county. The Kohtla mining museum takes you underground. PUBLIC museum mine, Estonia.
