Sloss Furnaces

Birmingham (Jefferson County, AL)

The great iron furnaces that built Birmingham, in blast from 1882 to 1971 and now a National Historic Landmark of rust and brick. The ghost is Theophilus Jowers, a foundryman who fell into the molten iron, and a cruel foreman called Slag, said to shove night visitors toward the pits; the site has drawn ghost-hunters and horror films for decades. You can tour the furnaces by day and the dark by October night.
