Twenty-nine mounds around a plaza, the centre of a chiefdom for five centuries

Twenty-nine platform mounds set around a rectangular plaza on the Black Warrior River, and between the 11th and 16th centuries the political and ceremonial centre of a Mississippian chiefdom that archaeologists know as the Province of Pafalaya. The park covers 185 acres and is run by the University of Alabama Museums. This is not a ruin left to the weather but one of the most heavily investigated prehistoric sites in the Southeast, and a National Historic Landmark.
