Telkibanya in the Zemplen hills was a medieval royal gold and silver town of Hungary, with workings running back to the 1200s and a mining museum in the village today. Hungary’s wider mineral fame is its opal, the historic Hungarian precious opal of the Carpathians (from mines now in Slovakia) that supplied Europe before Australia was found. PUBLIC village museum, Hungary.
