Tanzanite is found in exactly one place on the planet: a few square kilometres of hills at Merelani, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. A Maasai herder found the first blue crystals in 1967, and the violet-blue gem (a variety of zoisite) became a sensation. Geologists estimate the deposit could be mined out within a generation, which may make it the first gemstone to vanish from the Earth in our lifetime. The mines are PRIVATE and industrial; buy certified stones in Arusha.
