Beyond tanzanite, Tanzania is one of the most varied gem countries on Earth: the Umba valley in the northeast yields sapphire and ruby in an unusual spread of colours, Longido produces ruby-in-zoisite (the green-and-red stone carved all over East Africa), and the Mahenge deposits produced the spinel finds that stunned the trade in 2007. Buy through the Arusha trade; mining is largely small-scale and hand-dug.
