Sacred to the Lakota as the place of emergence, the spot where the people first came into the world, and a cave of global renown among geologists for holding the finest examples anywhere of boxwork, a honeycomb of thin calcite fins on the ceilings. It breathes: the wind roaring in and out of its small natural entrance (from the pressure difference) is how it was found, and how it got its name. Above ground the park protects bison and prairie.
