Black Hills rose quartz

Rose quartz (SD state mineral), beryl

The pegmatites of the Black Hills around Custer and Keystone are famous mineral ground: the Scott Rose Quartz mine gave South Dakota its state mineral, and the district produced giant crystals of spodumene, beryl and the mica that was mined here through two world wars, alongside the tin and the Black Hills gold. Several old mines and rock shops around Custer and Keystone sell and show the material; the historic workings are mostly PRIVATE. The 1874 gold in these hills is what started it all.
