The ironclad that fought the Virginia to a draw, on the bottom off Hatteras
The Union ironclad, finished early in 1862 and the first ship of her kind the US Navy commissioned. On 9 March that year, under Lieutenant John L. Worden, she fought the casemate ironclad CSS Virginia to a stalemate at Hampton Roads, and naval warfare never went back. She went down off Cape Hatteras, and this is where she lies.
