The Moon-Eyed People

The Cherokee said that when they came to these mountains a people were already here, small and pale and moon-eyed, who could see in the dark but not by day, and who built the strange stone wall that still runs along the crest of Fort Mountain. Where the wall came from no one can say, and archaeologists argue over it yet. A little stone effigy of two moon-eyed figures survives in a museum in Murphy. The wall and the mystery are real.
