Ellison’s Cave, Pigeon Mountain

Georgia

One of the serious caves of North America, 1,063 feet deep and over twelve miles long inside Pigeon Mountain in northwest Georgia. It holds Fantastic Pit, a 586-foot free fall that is the second deepest pit in the United States, and Incredible Pit at 440 feet, the sixth. Understand what that means before you go anywhere near it: this is a VERTICAL cave for trained, equipped, roped cavers, and people have died here. It is managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and open year round except special hunting weekends, but you must carry a land use permit or a sportsman’s licence or you are trespassing. Walker County, Georgia.
