The Lost Adams Diggings (New Mexico claim)

New Mexico · The Gila / Datil high country (west-central New Mexico)

The most hunted lost mine in the Southwest. In the 1860s a man named Adams told of a canyon in the New Mexico high country, reached through a narrow zigzag door of rock, where gold nuggets lay in the gravel of a stream so thick you could pick them from between the roots. An Apache attack wiped out his party; Adams got away, and spent the rest of his life unable to find the canyon again. Generations have searched the Datil and Gila country for it. No one has ever proven they found it. Told as the classic lost-gold legend it is, in real, rugged, remote country.
