A copper pit started in 1909 and still being dug
An open-pit porphyry copper mine at Santa Rita, 15 miles east of Silver City, also called the Santa Rita mine or Santa Rita del Cobre. Mining engineer John M. Sully and Spencer Penrose started the Chino Copper Company here in 1909, and the pit has been eating the mountain ever since. IT IS STILL WORKING, owned and operated by Freeport-McMoRan subsidiaries, so this is a live industrial site rather than anywhere to go poking about.
