An English prospector’s 1897 copper strike, and the partner who did not walk away
The richest part of the Grand Encampment copper district in Carbon County. Ed Haggerty, a prospector out of Whitehaven in England, found the ore in 1897 and opened what he called the Rudefeha, backed by George Ferris and a handful of investors who mostly dropped out. Ferris stayed, the name changed, and the deposit turned out to be worth staying for.
