Rawlins held the Wyoming State Penitentiary from 1901, and when the prison moved to a new site elsewhere in town in 1981 the old one stayed standing. It is a museum now, and an unusually unvarnished one: guided tours run every hour through cell blocks that were in use within living memory, and the staff will tell you about the men who were held here by name. The reputation that has grown around the building is taken seriously enough by the people who run it that they put on their own Haunted Halloween each year, which is a more honest answer than most places give. PUBLIC museum on West Walnut Street, open daily 9am to 5pm, tours hourly from 9:30 to 4:30. Do not confuse it with the working state prison, which is a different site entirely and not somewhere to go looking.
