A living tree that was old before the pyramids were built
High on the eastern face of the White Mountains in Inyo County, east of the Owens Valley, in air thin enough that almost nothing else bothers. Great Basin bristlecone pines grow here between 9,800 and 11,000 feet in xeric alpine conditions, inside the Inyo National Forest, and they grow slowly enough to outlast civilisations. The Methuselah Grove holds Methuselah itself, a bristlecone 4,858 years old and the oldest known and confirmed living tree on Earth. It was already ancient when the pyramids were new. The Patriarch Grove up here is also the source of Cottonwood Creek, a designated Wild and Scenic River.
